From October 19 to 30, 2026, the COP-17 Conference dedicated to biodiversity protection is being held in Yerevan, with the participation of the 17 Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD, adopted in 1992). Hosted by Armenia, this is one of the largest and most significant international environmental summits in the world. The main goal of COP-17 is to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, preserve the Earth’s ecosystems, plant and animal species, and ensure the sustainable and equitable use of natural resources. The conference serves as an international platform where representatives, scientists, environmentalists, and civil society members from around 190 countries assess the implementation of large-scale commitments and define an action plan for the coming years.<\/p>\n

Representing His Holiness Pope Leo XIV and the Holy See of the Catholic Church, the conference is attended by H. E. Archbishop Ante Jozi\u0107, the Papal Nuncio to Armenia; also Very Rev. Fr. Aliaksandr Rahinia, the Secretary of the Apostolic Nuncio; also Sophy Poghosyan, the Auxiliary Secretary of the Nunciature; and Fr. Komitas Daveyan, the representative of the Armenian Catholic Ordinariate, with the blessing of H. E. Archbishop Kevork Noradounguian.<\/p>\n

The Holy See holds Permanent Observer status at the United Nations and its various environmental assemblies (including COP summits). Although the Holy See is not a signatory party to the CBD Convention, it officially joined the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement in 2022, demonstrating its full commitment to overcoming global environmental crises. In its role as an international moral and spiritual leader and advocate, the Catholic Church actively supports biodiversity conservation and climate justice, influencing the quality of life of over 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide and shaping international policy in the environmental sphere.<\/p>\n

This influence grew significantly following the publication by His Holiness Pope Francis in 2015 and 2023 of two crucial letters of the Church’s social doctrine\u2014Laudato Si\u2019<\/em> (encyclical) and Laudate Deum <\/em>(exhortation). These documents addressed large-scale environmental issues and their human caused, social roots, linking environmental disasters and human poverty as consequences stemming from the same underlying causes. In his second document, the Pope emphasized that “when human beings claim to take God\u2019s place, they become their own worst enemy.” Guided by its social teaching, the Catholic Church has always acted as the voice of humanity’s conscience, promoting the efforts of the global community while calling out the evident slowness and competing interests that hinder decisive and unified action.<\/p>\n
